2 GA Officers Accused of Running Background Checks on Obama

DECATUR, Ga. -- The DeKalb County police department is investigating two officers who have been accused of running a criminal background check on President Barack Obama.

County public safety director William Miller said in a prepared statement Wednesday that the officers have been put on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The officers' names were not released.

Miller said the police department was notified by the U.S. Secret Service that DeKalb County computers were used to run a query on Obama. He did not say what investigators believe was the officers' motive.

Miller said the officers' behavior will "not be tolerated" by the county.

Who really gives a **** if they did.

Most everytime someone has a background check done on them by the police, there's a good reason for it--committed a crime, trying to get a job w/them, etc...

Don't think either one of those, nor any other reason those two can come up with is a good enough reason to run a background check. I'd say the real reasons are either trying to dig up dirt on the president, or being bored out of their minds when they should have been doing something job related--and neither one of those things are an excuse.

I'm glad they were put on leave, maybe if they get rid of them they'll find officers that will not have their thumbs up a certain orifice while in the office, and will get out of the office and do real police work.

Wow so a background check is fake police work?

I don't see a problem with it. The guy put in for one of the most powerful jobs in the world. What the hell is wrong with checking him him out. No need to make folks lose jobs for trying to look out for America. No need to take food for children's mouths over it.

A background check for no reason other than curiosity or boredom is fake police work. That's what this looks like, regardless of what reason they come up with to justify doing it.

He didn't "put in" for any job--he's got the job, has an office that's oval and everything. I'm sure that any background checks the CIA/FBI put him through for running for POTUS were much more stringent than anything these two officers could come up with.

I simply think their time could have been spent, on the clock, trying to stop crime/catch criminals rather than checking the background of Obama. Why are they at the police station snickering over a speeding ticket Obama might have gotten X-years ago when they could be shutting down a meth lab/stopping dangerous drivers/catching murderers? Isn't that what the police is for, or are the rules different in DeKalb County?

Are you actually trying to claim that a background check on Obama is legit police work, as opposed to getting out from behind the desk and pounding the pavement to stop crime?

Somewhere in the back of my mind I am thinking that an officer or officers got into trouble for the same thing concerning a previous president. Can't remember which one.

Once a person is elected to the office there is no reason to be running a background check on them. It may not be the worst cause of abuse of power by police officers that day but it still should not have been done.

You don't have to be behind a desk to do a background check Lt Cane. Also are you saying all crime is committed on the street? Amazing! I bet McGruff the Crime Dog who beg to differ.

I know you're not serious. You actaully think these were great American patriots looking out for their country? They were two lazy/bored cops that cops that weren't doing their job. Just like if your boss catches you surfing the web, not working, just doing online shopping or something. He's been through a million back ground checks with people that were supposed to do them in like the FBI, CIA etc. etc.
